Massive protests are going on against the recently passed farm laws at the borders of Delhi and farmers from states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have been protesting since more than a week and demanding that the three farm laws be repealed.
To encourage the farmers taking part in the protests and to make his support towards them overtly established, former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav organised a sit-in dharna in Uttar Pradesh but has been detained and bundled into a police van.
The former CM of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav had come to sit on the dharma in support of the protesting farmers against the recently passed farm laws. Yadav was also scheduled to take part in the ‘Kissan Yatra’ today. He has decided to carry on the ‘Kissan Yatra’ today in Uttar Pradesh and had sat on the dharna in opposition of the farm laws outside his residence in Lucknow.
Along with his followers, he broke through various police barricades placed around his residence in Lucknow and organised a dharna in favour of the protesting farmers in Delhi. He told the reporters that if the farm laws are intended to help the farmers then the farmers shouldn’t have been protesting and that their protest itself means that it is not intended to help them.
He also appealed to the government to take the laws back and listen to the farmers who have been protesting.
It had been planned that Akhilesh Yadav would be participating in a 13 kilometre long ‘Kissan Yatra’ in support of the farmers demanding the repeal of the new farm laws that have been introduced by the BJP government at the Centre. The police said that there were plans of conducting the rally despite the fact that permission had not been granted for it by the district magistrate and therefore he had to be detained and the raid around the SP office had to be sealed in Lucknow. It was on Sunday that the SP had said that it would be initiating rallies against the farm laws in all the districts of Uttar Pradesh starting from December 7.
Samajwadi Party is among those parties which are supporting the farmers in their fight against the farm laws along with parties like the Congress and the Aaam Aadmi Party.
Akhilesh Yadav said, “The BJP is selling mandis and the farmers are not getting the MSP for their crops. The prices of pesticides and fertilisers have gone up. Framers were given false promises. The protesting farmers have been met with no sympathy. The BJP had promised to double the farmers’ income by 2022, but that is not happening.”
