Activist Akhil Gogoi Tests Coronavirus Positive

Assamese activist Akhil Gogoi has tested positive for coronavirus in prison. He has been behind the bars at the Guwahati Central jail where another inmate had tested positive one month ago. It has been decided that Akhil Gogoi will be treated at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital.

Another well-known political figure in the state and former chief of National Democratic From of Bodoland(R) Ranjan Daimary who had also been behind bars at the Gauhati Central jail has also tested positive for coronavirus. More than 20 inmates have tested positive for coronavirus in the same prison. Reports about Akhil Gogoi not keeping well had emerged in the media in the first week of July and it had been reported that he is showing signs of coronavirus infection. Even his wife had learnt about his illness from Facebook posts and reports in the local media and said that she had no details about her husband’s heath.

Advocates for Gogoi and his aides filed a petition before the National Investigation Agency requesting that they be tested for Coronavirus. The court ensured that they were tested on July 9 and Gogoi has tested positive for Coronavirus.
