In a latest development from Meghalaya, the state government has suspended internet services in six districts of the state. The suspension of the internet has come about because violent clashes broke out in the state between Khasi Students’ Union and the non-tribals in the East Khasi Hills district of the state.
One person also died during the cashes between the KSU and the non-tribals during a meeting on the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) and the inner line permit in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills.
The violent clashes between the two groups took place during a protest against the CAA and a pro inter line permit meeting in the Ichamati district on Friday.
As a result of these clashes, mobile and internet services have been suspended in the region from Friday night onwards for a period of 48 hours.
The local administration has also gone ahead an imposed a curfew in Shillong and other adjoining areas which would continue from February 28- February 29.
Reports suggest that during the clashes an attempt had been made to damage public property and homes and the attack on several vehicles that lay on the roadside.
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma has said that an inquiry will be conducted to look into the matter and several companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAF) have been deployed in large numbers to patrol the area.
