Factory to Fumes: Delhi Anaj Mandi Fire Kills 43

Most of the people who died were labourers who were sleeping at the factory in Anaj Mandi on Rani Jhansi Road when the fire broke out at 5 am.

In one of the most tragic incidences to have unfolded over the last couple of months, forty-three people have been killed by a massive fire that swept through a luggage factory that was operating from the residential area of Anaj Mandi in Delhi. The incident took place in the wee hours of the morning. 50 people have been rescued from the site so far. It is believed that the fire erupted due to a short-short-circuit. Rescue efforts are in full-swing on the site of the accident. 

Commenting on the tragic unfolding of events at the Anaj Mandi today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “ The fire in Delhi’s Anaj Mandi on Rani Jhansi Road is extremely horrific. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. Wishing the injured a quick recovery. Authorities are providing all possible assistance at the site of the tragedy.”

The Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi government has ordered a probe into the accident and asked for a report on the same within a week’s time. The incident had come to light when the fire department received a call at 5.22 am, following which fire tenders were rushed to the site of the tragic accident. Many people who were trapped inside the factory were rescued and rushed to RML Hospital and Hindu Rao Hospital.

The fire broke out at a six-storey factory located in Anaj Mandi . Many people who had been trapped inside the building but were later rushed to the hospital also died succumbing to their burn injuries. Since the factory was operating in an areas that was narrow and congested with many manufacturing units posed side to side, it spread out more massively and caused large scale deaths and injuries at the site.
