BIHAR | The state of Bihar has again seen a tragic incident unfolding itself in the last 36 hours.
Over the last 36 hours, lightning strikes have killed around 32 people including women and children in several parts of Bihar. On July 20th , 11 people were killed in lightening strikes.
Last year ( 2018) a similar tragedy killed 17 people while 29 were killed in 2017. This is an annual occurrence in different parts of the country.
This year the largest number of deaths have been reported from Jamui (8 deaths), Aurangabad (7 deaths) and Banka (5 deaths).
The state government has announced Rs 4 lakhs exgratia compensation to the family of the victims.
The victims are largely from villages, and in monsoons they were used to working in their agricultural fields. It is obvious that state government is familiar with this annual occurrence and yet nothing was done to avoid the tragedy.
The disaster management authority ritually puts out advertisements in public such as those on ‘ how to save yourself from a thunderstorm’ but fails to reach out to people.
This yearly occurrence is responsible for killing many people in the state and the state government needs to work urgently to save people from such calamities.
