Jamia Milia Islamia became the centre of mass violence and a severe clash between the police personnel and the students this evening. The Delhi Police cracked down on protesting students at the university campus leading to a massive backlash resulting in injury of several people and the damage to public property.
The police restarted to massive lathi-charge and firing of tear gas shells. Speaking about the issues DCP South East Delhi Chinmaya Biswal said that they were not against the university and that they had to scatter the raging crowds to maintain the law and order situation. The police also alleged that students pelted stones on them and now the situation was under control.
The protests against the Citizenship(Amendment)Act have taken an all together new turn in New Delhi. The protests turned extremely violent especially in and around Jamia Milia Islamia University where there was a massive clash between the students and the police. The clashes took place at around 5 pm in this South Delhi neighbourhood.
The police resorted to baton-charging the demonstrators and fired tear gas at them so that they could disperse quickly. The police allege that the students engaged in a massive destruction of public property and set three buses on fire. Students of the Jamia Milia Islamia University have gone ahead and dissociated themselves from this violence in a joint statement and said, “ We have time and again maintained that our protests are peaceful and non-violent.We stand by this approach and condemn any party involved in this violence.”
Videos of the violence in Jamia began surfacing across various platforms at around 7pm this evening and showed the police firing tear gas shells inside the university premises.
Mr. Waseem Ahmed Khan, Chief Proctor Jamia Milia Islamia said, “ Police have entered the campus by force, no permission was given. Our staff and students have beeb beaten up and forced to leave the campus.”
Many students were injured during this violent turn that the anti CAB protests took at the university. Many students were also detained at the Kalkaji Police station where they had allegedly been denied permission to meet lawyers.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union had called for a protest at 9 p outside the Delhi Police headquarters to protect the police violence that took place in Jamia today.
Meanwhile similar striking protests have started taking place in Aligarh Muslim University too after a violent outbreak in Delhi’s Jamia Milia Islamia University. Students on Aligarh have come out in protest of the crackdown on students at Jamia and are protesting against the CAB.
