The residents doctors of many of Delhi’s major government hospitals are threatening to go on an indefinite strike to showcase their protest against the National Medical Commission Bill 2019.
The doctors who are planning to go an indefinite strike include this from All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Safdarjung Hospital and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
The bill has been passed in the Lot Sabha on Monday and will be put ahead of members in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The bill against which the doctors are claiming to start a resistance is the National Medical Commission Bill that seeks to regulate medical education and practice in the country.
The main agenda of the bill is to replace the highest medical authority in India, i.e. the Medical Council of India that regulates medical education in the nation with the National Medical Commission and introduce a common final-year MBBS examination.
This exam will be the national exit test that will allow admission into postgraduate medical courses and provide people a license to work as medical practitioners.
The resident doctors have issued a a statement wherein they have said that they will refrain from working in OPDs, emergency departments and the ICUs to mark their protest and their strike will go on if the bill is passed in the Rajya Sabha.
The association has asked medical students to boycott classes to merge with the protest. They said that they would intensify the protest if the government continued to be indifferent to their demands.
