In a latest turn of events, the Jamia Milia Islamia University had decided to move a Delhi court to register an FIR or a first information report against the police action during violence on the campus on December 15. The JMI officials said that the decision about moving a Delhi court had been taken in an executive council meeting. They also reported that the university’s administration will move the court seeking it to direct the police to register the complaint and resolve the matter. This announcement has come a day after the VC of Jamia Milia Islamia Najma Akhtar met the Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to urge him to file an FIR in this context. Akhtar’s office had been gheraoed by hundres of students on Monday and demanded the registration of an FIR against the police action on December 15. The university had said that it would take all possible measures to address the concerns that the students had brought forward.
It was on Tuesday that a team from the National Human Rights Commission visited the Jamia campus in order to record the statements of the students who were injured during the violence that broke out on December 15. The violence had broken out last month when the protest march by Jamia students ended in a pitched battle with the Delhi Police. During the violence, buses were set on fire and several students were seriously injured. The police was accused of using excessive force and assaulting innocent students. Later the Police also entered the campus of the Aligarh Muslim University and a clash broke out there also between the police and the students. They baton charged the students and used tear gas shells on them. After this, numerous protests have been taking place across university campuses in India where students are continually protesting against the amendments to the Citizenship Act and the brutality of the police against students. Aligarh Muslim University(AMU) students are also building up pressure on their respective university administration to file an FIR against the police for the crackdown on the university.
