The country is presently witnessing severe protests against the CAA and the NRC and in many of these protests foreign nationals have also made their presence felt. Ever since it was noted by the government that foreigners too are taking part in these protests, they have left no stone unturned to ensure that there is an active filtering out of foreign nationals and they are given notices to leave India.
The latest case of a student being asked to leave India is that of a student from Poland studying at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University. The student has been asked to leave India at the earliest by the Ministry of Home Affairs for having taken part in Anti-CAA demonstrations in the city. Days before this, Afsara Anika Meem, a student from Bangladesh studying at Shantiniketan was issued a similar notice. These students have been asked to leave the country for their alleged involvement in ‘anti-government’ activity and for taking part in Anti-CAA demonstrations. In December 2019, Jacob Lindenthal, a German student IIT Madras was sent back home and Norwegian tourist Janne Mette Johansson was questioned by Foreigners Regional Office(FRRO)in Kochi for similar reasons.
