Coronavirus Highlights/ WHO Predicts COVID-19 Will Hit 20 Million People This Week

The coronavirus related mortality rate has dropped below 2% for the first time in weeks in India according to the Health Ministry. This announcement was made after PM Narendra Modi conducted a virtual meeting with the chief ministers of ten states.  India has scored 53,601 cases of coronavirus in the last one day and 871 new deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus positive cases in the country is now 22,68,675 with 45,257.  More than 15,83,489 coronavirus infected patients have recovered from the disease. 

  • In a first ever move, Russia has launched the first ever coronavirus vaccine. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the approval of the coronavirus vaccine makes it the first in the world to do so. The questions around the unanswered questions and safety around the usage of the vaccine are yet to be explained. Putin said that the vaccine promises better immunity. Critics have said that Russia has been in a hurry to launch the vaccine because of political pressures from Kremlin, which is pressing to portray Russia as a global scientific force.  Russia has not released any scientific data and has not verified the claims that it made about the vaccine.
  • The Sabarimala Temple in Kerala will be opened for devotees during the main pilgrimage season beginning from November 16 with Covid-19 protocol in place. The entry will only be through the government’s virtual queue system and devotees will have to upload their Covid negative certificates. 
  • The head of the World Health Organization ( WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus  predicted that the number of people infected by the coronavirus will hit 20 million this week, including about 750,000 deaths.Over 90% of Coronavirus patients in Delhi have now recovered. Only 7% cases are active now: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. Till Monday, the total number of positive cases in the state has crossed 80,000 with the 1,256 cases in the last 24 hours. The state has also reported 637 deaths so far.
  • The Indian Medical Association (IMA) said that the death of doctors due to Covid-19 in Bihar was nine times more than national average. According to The Hindu, 19 doctors in the state have died of the infection so far.The health bulletin showed 470 new coronavirus cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday; 102 from Jammu Division and 368 from Kashmir division. The total number of cases reached 25,367. The tally includes 17,375 recovered cases, 7514 active cases. The death toll stands at 478. Globally, coronavirus has impacted more than 2 crore people across the world, according to the Johns Hopkins University. The worldwide toll has risen to 7,34,664, while more than 1.21 crore people have recovered from the infection.
