The festive season led to crowding and the dismissal of social distancing norms in many states and perhaps this is one of the biggest reasons why we are seeing a sudden spike in the number of coronavirus cases in the country. It has to be noted that the spike in cases in the recent weeks is a matter of concerns despite the fact that India as a whole reported less than 50,000 fresh daily cases for the 15th consecutive day and the tally has now climbed to 90.95 lakh.
The Union Health Ministry has said that the central teams have been sent to many states and especially to operate in districts that have been seeing a steady spike in the amber of cases. These teams will be visiting the districts within each state that have reported a hike in the number of cases and support the state towards its efforts for the containment, surveillance, testing, infection prevention and control mechanisms so that the pandemic may be efficiently controlled.
The total number of active case in the country has continued to remain below the 5 lakh mark for more than the last ten days.
More than 26 states and Union Territories have less than 20,000 active cases and seven states have active cases between 20,000 and 50,000. Maharashtra and Kerala are states with the highest active cases.
Delhi and Kerala have been contributing the largest number of new active cases and the country as a whole has been reporting more than 5,000 cases daily.
It is believed that India’s Capital Delhi is presently having its third wave of COVID-19 infections.
The government has been taking various steps to contain and control the spike in infections such as house to house surveys, increase in ICU beds in private hospitals and reservation of seats for COVID-19 patients, enhanced penalty for not wearing masks etc.
Maharashtra has been contemplating about not allowing flights from select destination to be able to check the spread of the infection. Schools have been required to stay closed till December 31.
While there has been a steady spike in coronavirus cases in northern India, southern states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have been seeing a dip in the number of cases and so has Odisha.
This has made the government to allow the reopening of schools for classes 9th and 12th and also allowed the opening of cinema halls.
