The New Leam Staff
The results for the Bangladesh elections are out and the ruling coalition has got more than 80% of the votes. This great percentage of votes makes this government one of the strongest in South Asia.
The winning of Sheikh Hasina has made a record because not before in the history of Bangladesh has any leader been able to come as Prime Minister for the third term.
The ruling coalition headed by Sheikh Hasina had a landslide victory and this success of her coalition means that they make the government for the third term.
This has unleashed important celebrations across the nation because Sheikh Hasina is the first political leader in the history of Bangladesh to come to power three times.
The coalition had gone to the polls banking on Hasina’s track record of development with the hope that the masses will cast their votes in favour of the Awami League over the Opposition. The Awami League has wanted to gather public votes on the basis of a free, anti-communal politics that still believes in the liberation war spirit.
The Opposition Jatiya Oikya Front was hoping that the anti-incumbency would catch up with Hasina’s government and make way for the release of Zia from prison.
It is asserted that the BNP’s discretion to give out tickets to former Jamaar-e-Islami candidates backfired against the, as the people have not gotten over the attacks against the minority groups that heightened in a large way during the years 2001-2206. It is also good news to India, as at present India has good relations with Sheikh Hasina’s government.
The relationship of India with BNP-Jamaat alliance government became bitter when there were sustained attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh.
The Opposition of Bangladesh is not happy with the outcome of the elections and has called the elections farcical. Many people have been killed in election related violence across Bangladesh.
