In a surprising new development to the Babri Masji land dispute case, the Sunni Waqf Board has filed for settlement and has dropped its claim to the Babri Masjid land.
The Board’s decision to drop its claim over the centuries old site of the Babri Masjid which was demolished by Hindutva activists and leaders, comes as nothing less than a very surprising development.
The Sunni Waqf Board was the primary litigant in the title dispute case but it has informed the Supreme Court that it is no longer interested in pursuing its appeals in this matter and wishes to file for settlement.
The development in the Supreme Court came during the last day of hearing by the five-judge Constitution Bench. The Bench was headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi.
The Bench had heard arguments from the two Hindu litigants in the case- the Ramjanmabhoomu Nyas, controlled by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and the Nirmohi Akhara as well as the Sunni Waqf Board. It is being expected that before his retirement in November, the Constitution Bench under Justice Ranjan Gogoi will deliver its judgement in this controversial case.
