On Friday the Delhi government gave a final nod to the city police to prosecute the former JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar and two others in connection with the sedition case of 2016. The file has been with the Home department since May 5,2019.
The official records suggest that the police had applied to the Delhi government for prosecution sanction just two hours prior to the filing of the charge sheet in the case on January 14,209.
In the absence of a sanction, the court has been continually deferring taking cognisance of the charge sheet.
The Police had claimed through its charge sheet that former JNUSU President and youth leader, Kanhaiya Kumar haha supported seditious slogans during an event held in the university premise on February 9,2016. Apart from Kanhaiya Kumar, two other JNU students namely Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattarcharya and others were charge sheeted for allegedly shouting “anti-India” slogans in the event that marked he handing of the 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
