Delhi University Student’s Body Elections Updates

Much awaited DUSU elections were concluded yesterday, receiving a footfall of nearly 1 lakh students to vote in the Delhi University campus. The voting began at 8:30 am in morning colleges and 3:00 pm in evening colleges and went on till 1:00 pm and 7:30 pm respectively.

A total of 23 candidates were  contesting for the post of President, Vice-President, Joint Secretary, and Secretary for the Students Union of the University of Delhi.Three parties were contesting this time namely- NSUI, ABVP and CYSS. The youth wing of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has chosen  Ankiv Basiyo for the post of President, Shakti Singh for Vice President, Sudhir for Secretary and Jyoti Choudhary for Joint Secretary.

National Student Union of India (NSUI), youth wing of the Congress party has Sunny Chillar for President, Leena for Vice President, Aakash Choudhary for Secretary and Saurabh Yadav for Joint Secretary contesting this time.

Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), youth wing of the alliance between All India Students Association (AISA) and Aam Admi Party (AAP). Anshika, Chandramani and Sunny Tanwar are contesting for the post of Vice President, Secretary and Joint Secretary respectively.

This time students have raised issues which are intrinsic to them and similarly looking for a representative who can fulfil their demands and not just be trapped into the game of party politics. Among various others issues students think it is important to end hooliganism in campus, getting access to 24X7 library for students, safe campus for women are some of the issues raised by women.

The parties have claimed to be bringing student’s issues to light and also making them their agenda for the year both in their election speeches and manifestos. The DUSU elections are important since ahead of the 2019 elections it will serve as a good ground to study the mood of India’s largest population- the YOUTH. Counting of the votes finally began on Thursday, 13 September, amidst allegations of EVM tampering, the counting started in the afternoon but was disrupted for four hours in between as there demands of recounting of the votes by the contesting parties but overlooking all the demands and allegations the counting was resumed and finally in the evening around 8:00 pm the results were declared.

Bringing joy for the ABVP leaders and supports as the party could manage to secure three seats in the Delhi University Student Union. Ankiv Basiyo won the Presidential post, Shakti Singh won the Vice-President post and Jyoti Choudhary secured the post of Joint Secretary, all the three representative belonging to ABVP. While on the other hand NSUI managed to secure one seat in the union as Akash Choudhary managed to win the Secretary post. The AISA-AAP alliance CYSS could not manage to secure any position in the union.
