For their alleged involvement in the Bhima Koregaon upsurge and alleged involvement in Maoist organisation, the Police conducted raids across many states in India – arresting five eminent activists. Eminent scholars have filed a petition to the SC seeking the immediate release of the activists.

The recent arrests of five eminent activists from all over the country has led to great debate in the country. The five eminent activists were arrested over a period of two days due to their alleged involvement in the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).
Police on Thursday has arrested the five activists after sever raids in Mumbai, Thane, Hyderabad, Ranchi, Delhi and Faridabad. In a response to these arrests eminent scholars like Romila Thapar, Devika Jain, Prabhat Patnaik, Satish Deshpande moved the SC questioning the arrest of activists Sudha Bhardwaj, Gautam Navlakha, Arun Ferreria, Vernon Gonsalvis and P Varava Rao.
The petitioners said that the arrests were made to neglect any voices of dissent that were emerging within the nation. The petitioners also expressed their concerns as the activists were arrested under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
They urged the SC to scrutinise the charge that have been put on these activists and the SC has agreed to hear the plea today. The five activists were alleged of having links to Maoist groups. The petition has wanted and urgent stay on the arrests as well as the release of the five activists.
