In a latest development to the ongoing countrywide protests against the CAA, internet and SMS services of all service providers have been suspended in Lucknow till December 21. The services have been suspended due to an order by the Uttar Pradesh government. The Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Kumar Awasthi issued an order to this effect late on Thursday night.
The order is effective from 3pm December 19 till 12 pm December 21. The state administration said that the action had been taken keeping in mind the law and order situation in the state that has erupted in the aftermath of the ongoing anti-CAA protests.
A 25 year old man was killed as violence erupted in the state capital and some other parts of UP with protestors, angry over the amended citizenship law, pelting stones at police and torching vehicles.
Internet services have also been suspended in various other parts of the state such as Sambhal, Aligarh, Mau, Ghaziabad and Azamgarh districts, even as Section 144 of the CrPc, which bans assembly of possible, was already in force in the entire state for several days.
The government of Karnataka has suspended mobile services in Dakshina Kannada district on Thursday during the hours of night for 48 hours after two persons were killed in police firing while a violent protest broke out in Mangaluru against the citizenship law.
The decision on suspending the internet from 10 pm was taken in order to prevent the misuse of social media platforms that could lead to the disturbance of law and order situation. The decision had been taken on the request of the state police chief.Police have also clamped curfew in parts of the city till Sunday midnight.Police also resorted to the use of tear gas shells to disperse the crowd protesting against the CAA in Mangaluru.
