Militant Blast Jolts Guwahati: Separatists Demand Independent Nationhood

GUWHATI | A militant blast has recently jolted Guwahati. The blast took place at one of the most crowded public places in the city. However, the redeeming feature was that it did not lead to large scale destruction of either life or of property.

On Wednesday, 15th May, 2019 at least twelve people got injured during a blast that took place outside a shopping mall in Guwahati.

The incident was reported from the zoo road area of Guwahati, where it was reported that two men riding on a motorcycle threw grenade in front of the mall which caused the blast, took place at 8 p.m in the night.

In the blast out of the twelve people who got injured two of them were Seema Shashastra Bal personnel, namely Amulya Ratan Mahato and Ramesh Lal, as reported by The Hindu.

All the injured people were taken to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital and two other private hospitals, no death has been reported as of now.

 The Police Commissioner of Guwahati, Deepak Kumar said “Two men came on a motorcycle and threw a grenade in front of the shopping mall at arterial R G Baruah Road just opposite the zoo.”

Right after the attack the terrorist group United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) claimed responsibility for the attack. On Thursday, 17th May 2019, police officials arrested two people in relation with the case. Rajguru who hails from Sivasagar and television actor Jahnavi Saikia are the one whom the police has arrested. The Guwahati police carried out raid at their rented apartment in Baghabari area.

It was alleged that Saikia is accused of aiding Rajguru and both have allegedly played a key role in planning the attack in which at least 12 people were injured, as reported in Scroll.in.

The IANS reported that the police commissioner informed that three people were suspected in the case, he further said “A 9 mm pistol, 25 rounds of ammunition, 20 kg of gunpowder and bomb-making equipment were seized during the raid in Bagharbari. Operating under sleeper cells in Guwahati and adjoining areas, he helped the outfit execute their plans, and was assisted by Jahnavi Saikia. They have confessed to the crime, and our investigation will continue. We have come to know their modus operandi behind the blast, but we are trying to find out the greater design behind it.”

After the attack the security situation in the state has become extremely tight as the police officials are checking every nook and corner to nab the accused. The Chief Minister of the state Sarbananda Sonowal ordered to adopt every possible measure to punish the accused.

The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) is a militant group working in the northeastern state of Assam. The group was banned by the Indian government for proliferating terrorist activities in 1990 but still it continues to operate illegally till now.

The group demands for the establishment of independent state of Assam out of India, over the years they have adopted to armed struggle in order to achieve their ends. Paresh Baruah is currently the head of this militant organization.
