The formation of the Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra came after many political twists and turns and even now the once enemies and now allies- the Shiv Sena and the Congress seem to differ on their takes on various issues. The Shiv Sena and the Congress along with the NCP may have formed the government in Maharashtra, but the fact that they are ideologically at two ends of the spectrum seems quite evident.
The Shiv Sena has reacted quite strongly to Rahul Gandhi’s recent statement, “My name is not Rahul Savarkar.”
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut took to Twitter and gave Rahul Gandhi a clear message and expressed that there couldn’t be any compromise as far as the reverence of an icon like Savarkar was concerned.
Raut said, “ We believe in Pandit Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi. Don’t insult Savarkar. Veer Savarkar is the God of not only Maharashtra but also the country. The name Savarkar ia a matter of nation’s pride. Like Nehru and Gandhi, Savarkar sacrificed his life for the country’s independence. Every such God should be honoured.”
While speaking at the Congress’s “Bharat Bachao Rally” in Delhi. Rahul Gandhi had earlier refused to apologise for his “rape in India” remark. Rahul Gandhi refused to apologise and instead said “ My name is not Rahul Savarkar, it is Rahul Gandhi, and I will not apologise for speaking the truth.
Rahul Gandhi’s remarks evoked strong reactions from the BJP, which demanded an apology from him.
