In a latest development coming in from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, former chief minister of the state and leader of the People’s Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti’s detention under the PSA has been extended for three months more.
She had been put under detention since August 5,219 under the Public Safety Act for another three months. The first time that Mehbooba Mufti was charged under the PSA was six months ago and this is going to be the third time that she is being charged. The charges that have been posed on her in the current term will be coming to an end on August 5. Other important leaders of Jammu and Kashmir such as Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah have already been released after staying under house arrest since August last year.
Mehbooba Mufti is facing her detention at home and her residence has been termed ‘subsidiary jail’ by the government.
The renewed extension of PSA for the PDP leader will mean that she will stay detained for more than one year.Under the PSA, a charged person can be detained many times without trial. Many important leaders of Jammu and Kashmir were detained last year when the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was ended and it was split into two union territories on August 5 last year.
The Centre argued that this move was necessary to maintain the peace and law and order of the erstwhile state and prevent backlash from people in opposition of the move.
Omar Abdullah had also been detained along with Mehbooba Mufti and several other important leaders of the erstwhile state, Omar Abdullah was released towards the end of March. Recently People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone was released after serving a year under detention.
