The standoff between the Congress and the UP government has finally come to an end and Priyanka Gandhi has returned back to Delhi. The deadlock between the two parties ended with a show of solidarity by Priyanka Gandhi who also met with the family members of those shot in the Sonbhadra massacre on Wednesday.
On Wednesday, Sonbhadra region of Uttar Pradesh witnessed a tragic state of affairs when ten people from the Gond tribe were shot dead when the village headman and his team open fired on them in order to take possession of a piece of land.
Twenty-eight other people have also been injured in the attack. Priyanka Gandhi was detained as she tried to visit the area and meet with party workers who were staging protest against the brutal assault in different parts of the state. As the general secretary of Eastern UP and an important member of the Opposition, her presence captured the attention of the media in a big way. Other leaders of the Congress such as Raj Babbar, Rajeev Shukla and others wanted to visit Sonbhadra also but had been stopped at the Varanasi airport.
This was also the time when Priyanka Gandhi was facing detention. The Congress delegation had earlier also submitted a plea to the UP Governor Ram Nail to allow Priyanka Gandhi to meet with the families of those who had lost their lives in the Sonbhadra massacre.
A three member delegation of the Trinamool Congress had also been detained at the Varanasi airport.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath blamed the previous government for allowing land disputes to fester in such a manner. Priyanka Gandhi was stopped from visiting Ubbha village where the incident had unfolded and was instead brought to a guesthouse in Mirzapur under preventive detention.
Priyanka Gandhi has promised that her party will donate a sum of Rs 10 lakh per family to those killed in the violence and asserted that the state government should pay a compensation if Rs 25 lakh each. She spent time with the families members of which had come in large numbers to met her in the Mirzapur guesthouse where she had been detained.
