In an interesting new development to the countrywide anti-CAA movements, the women of Punjab had decided to make their presence felt on the political landscape of the country. On February 1, nearly 20,000 protestors mainly comprising of women took to the streets of Punjab, against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The rally organised by women was designed to raise awareness on the Act and to generate awareness among the people about a bigger protest rally that would be organised on February 16.

The rally was organised under the banner of the Bharatiya Kisan Union(Ekta)Ugrahan group and saw the participation of several Muslim organisations such as the Jamat-e-Islami Hindi and Zarka Zaafri.

The women of Punjab who took part in the protest demonstration organised against the CAA were all dressed in Yellow clothing to symbolise unity beyond religious symbolisms.

They chanted slogans proclaiming unity of all religions in India. The rally was addressed at several points across the town of Malerkotla and saw the participation by large number of local women.

A press release from the group asserted that the country needed to rise above religious differences and work towards equality and unity among people irrespective of religious backgrounds.

The group of women also went on to condemn the violence that has been perpetrated in the past on peaceful protestors in various states across the country and expressed solidarity with the students of Jawaharlal Nehru and Jamia Milia Islamia.

It was on January 17 that the Punjab state assembly had passed a resolution demanding that the CAA be scarped.

It was state minister Brahm Mohindra who had moved the resolution against the CAA on the second day of a two day long special session of the assembly.
