Congress President Rahul Gandhi accused party workers for not supporting the party and the party chief during election campaigning for the Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
Speaking at the Congress Working Committee meeting on Saturday, 25th May 2019, the party chief accused senior leaders for being selfish. He alleged that senior party leaders like Ashok Gehlot, P. Chidambaram and Kamal Nath placed their sons above the party interest during elections. This he said was a one of the major reason for the party’s poor performance during the Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
Addressing the meeting Rahul Gandhi expressed displeasure and disappointment for not getting adequate support from the party workers on the issue of Rafale Deal and the “Chowkidaar Chor hai” jibe. He blamed the workers and leaders for not helping him in building a corruption narrative against Narendra Modi.
The meeting was co-addressed by Priyanka Gandhi, General Secretary of All India Congress Committee. Priyanka Gandhi looked equally dissatisfied at the party’s performance and the lack of support from the party leaders and workers.
As reported, when one of the party leader asked the party president to strengthen the party’s hold in the northern states rather than resigning from his position, she abruptly intervened to comment “Where were you when my brother was fighting all alone, why did you not support him when he raised the Rafale Deal issue”?
Challenging the Party leaders P. Chidambaram Rahul Gandhi said that Mr. Chidambaram was ready to leave the party if his son was denied a party ticket. Similar accusation was made against Kamal Nath as well by the chief. Karti Chidambaram (Son of P. Chidambaram) and Nakul Nath (Son of Kamal Nath) contested and won the Lok Sabha Assembly election from Tamil Nadu and Bhopal respectively.
He accused Ashok Gehlot for not campaigning for the party in Rajasthan as he was busy campaigning for his son Vaibhav Singh in Jodhpur, who was contesting from Jodhpur Constituency. This he said was complete negligence at the part of Mr. Gehlot and a big dent on the party’s image. Despite winning the state assembly election the party failed to win the Lok Sabha seat from Jodhpur Constituency. Party leaders from Rajasthan have backed Rahul Gandhi’s claim against Gehlot and have asked for inquiry in the matter.
Furious Rahul Gandhi tabled his resignation letter at the working committee meeting. He said his resignation letter was a symbol of the guilt and the moral responsibility bestowed at him for the poor performance of the party in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
Adding to this the party chief also declared that there will be no successor from the Gandhi family for the political party Congress henceforth. Nonetheless his resignation has not been accepted yet as many party leaders have opposed this move of Mr. Gandhi.
In the Lok Sabha Assembly elections 2019 the Congress party has managed to win 52 seats out of the 543 Lok Sabha Assembly seats overall. Rahul Gandhi won the MP seat from Wayanad district in Kerala. Interestingly he lost from his home seat in Amethi where the BJP candidate Smriti Irani could manage to win.
In the past couple of days after the results of the Lok Sabha election state head of congress party in Amethi, Karnataka, Odisha and Fatehpur Sikri have put down their resignation letter owing to the failure of the party and taking moral responsibility for the same.
The situation of the congress party internally and externally is very sensitive and intense at this time. With political leaders putting across their resignation letters and the party chief making allegations on MPs for their loss, the future of the party looks glim.
In the Lok Sabha Assembly elections 2019 the strength of the congress party has been showcased. A party known for dynastic politics has for the first time in the history of Indian Politics refused to give a successor: a Gandhi successor.
The General Secretary of the party Priyanka Gandhi has refused to support the resignation of Rahul Gandhi saying that it will be a very weak move from the party’s side and doing so would not only mean falling in the trap of the political rival BJP.
