The Supreme Court has said that the children who were born on or after December 3, 2004 shall not be included in the updated version of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in case even if one of their parents has been marked as a doubtful voter (D Voter) in the electoral list of Assam or has been declared to be a foreigner by the tribunal or in case he/she is contesting a case related to their citizenship in a Foreigner’s Tribunal (FTs).
The Supreme Court has asked the state coordinator for NRC, Prateek Hajela to issue a public notice so that all the stakeholders of the state can be informed and it has also said that any prayers in this contest will be taken into consideration only when the court meets for its next hearing on August 7, 2019.
In order to protest against this move, the Assam based anti-migration organisation called Prabajan Virodhi Manch(PVM) has been demanding that the Section 3 of the Act be amended and March 24,1971 be taken as the date for eligibility rather than December 3,2004.
The PVM has argued that the legitimization of 2004 would only make the Bangladeshi immigrants citizens and would make the indigenous people of Assam a minority by 2040.
