While the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was shaking hands with the US President Donald Trump at the G-7 Summit in France, Pakistani PM Imran Khan was busy reminding his people that they should be ready to go to any extent to support Kashmir.
Pakistani PM Imran Khan has appealed to all his countrymen to stand up for half an hour on every Friday. But what is he asking the citizens of Pakistan to stand for?
PM Imran Khan addressed his people by stating
“ Gone are the days when we used to stand with the Kashmiris metaphorically; now we will stand…literally.Once every week, for thirty minutes. Thats doable, right?”
Ever since PM Imran Khan made the announcement, people have been asking how this move will affect the lives and spirits of the Kashmiri people and what will be achieved out of it.
While the Pakistani PM’s appeal to his people may be seen as a request for solidarity against the Indian government’s decision to revoke the special autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir-the question really is, whether this would really contribute to the betterment of the Kashmiri people in any way.
Imran Khan also said that he would raise the Kashmir issue during the UN General Assembly on September 27 and inform the world leaders about it in New York.
Earlier in the month, Pakistan downgraded diplomatic ties with India.
PM Imran Khan had also said that his government would go to any extent to challenge the Modi regime’s crackdown on Kashmir.
It has been more than three weeks since the Kashmir crackdown was first initiated. The international community continues to remain largely silent about India’s political move in Kashmir-given this context, it seems quite unlikely that mass demonstrations in Pakistan will help sway the interest of these nations in any significant manner. Furthermore, while PM Imran Khan was appealing his countrymen to take to the streets in favour of Kashmir, PM Modi was busy meeting with world leaders at the G-7 Summit.
The point really is, at a time when Islamabad has been diplomatically isolated what impact will a half an hour protest for Kashmiris have.
While Pakistan may have no better options at hand to attract international media, the harsh reality remains that New Delhi continues to enjoy a considerable diplomatic position around the globe and is thus heard and paid more attention to than its Pakistani counterpart.
