In Focus: Former President Pranab Mukherjee Passes Away

Former President on India Pranab Mukherjee has passed away on Monday at the age of 84. His health condition continued to decline and he suffered a massive septic shock relating to the lung infection. He was receiving treatment at the Army Research and Referral Hospital in New Delhi. Pranab Mukherjee was a leader who was respected and admired across party lines and was conferred with the Bharat Ratna in 2019.


Activist-Lawyer Prashant Bhushan Asked to Pay Re 1 Fine in Contempt of Court Case : Well-Known activist and lawyer Prashant Bhushan had been asked to pay a fine of Re 1 in the context of the contempt of court case against him by the Supreme Court of India. He said that he has decided to “respectfully” pay the fine. However, he has also maintained that the tweets based on which he was alleged of contempt of court were in no way intended to disrespect either the Supreme Court or the Chief Justice of India.


JNU student Devangana Kalita’s  Bail Plea Rejected by Delhi Court : The Delhi Police had arrested Devangana Kalita  on May 30, 2020, citing her alleged involvement in instigating the north-east Delhi riots that shook the Capital in February, earlier this year.The JNU student’s bail plea has been rejected by the Delhi High Court.  Devangana Kalita is also a prominent member of Pinjara Tod. Devangana Kalita  and Natasha Narwal were arrested in May in connection to a protest against the CAA in north-east Delhi’s Jafrabad area in February. Both of them have been lodged at Delhi’s Tihar Jail.Delhi Police in their submissions have maintained that the riots were orchestrated by some Anti-CAA protesters such as Kalita, reported Hindustan Times.Kalita’s lawyer has constantly mentioned that she was protesting against the CC but is in no way involved with the breaking of riots in northeastern Delhi.


Tensions Escalating Between India and China in Eastern Ladakh May Delay Conflict Resolution :The talks between India and China to arrive at peace and resolution of the conflict in Ladakh have been stuck in a stalemate since July. But in a latest development in this regard, the Indian Army has alleged that China has been repeatedly attempting to brew up the tensions afresh and has been creating fresh trouble in new areas in the Galwan Valley and nearby areas around the South Bank of the Pangong Tso.The Indian Army has reported that the Chinese troops have been repeatedly trying to escalate tensions and bring conflict back on the table by bringing in their troops to change the status quo near the south bank of the Pangong Tso during the nights of August 29 and 30. The Indian Army has alleged that the Chinese troops were violating the agreements that had been arrived at mutually and diplomatic engagements that had taken place in the aftermath of the first set of conflicts.
