Forest fires happen regularly in the nation but the absence of infrastructural support leads to massive destruction of property and life. Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district is witnessing massive forest fire and indigenous people are labouring to minimise the damage.

The New Leam Staff

Forest fires take place in Uttarahand every year but inadequate efforts are made to avoid it.  Across the last many days in Chamoli district forest fires have made life extremely hard for communities living in the neighbourhood and animals who live in the forest. The forest department is continuously working to handle the matter but the fore has not been ended up till recently.

By Wednesday, the area under forest fires reached 2,037.77 hectares, which is 793 hectares more than the land impacted by forest fires last year, reports The Indian Express

In order to save themselves from burning, animals are moving near populated neighbourhood making life uncertain for inhabitants. Individuals living in villages close to jungles are working tirelessly to extinguish the fire and the forest department is not adequately working in this context.

The villagers allege that the forest department know about the crisis but sufficient effort has not been put by them to control the fire. It is paradoxical that in a nation like India where forest fires occur each year, adequate infrastructural mechanism are not employed to address the issue.

It is extremely hazardous for people living near the jungle amidst smoke and fire and in spite of the crisis the government seems inadequately involved. The local communities are labouring to ensure that minimum destruction unfolds.

Nation-states possess infrastructure and human force that can handle a crisis like forest fire urgently and it should immediately be employed. It is acknowledged that several individuals have already died in Uttarakhand due to the fire in the forests.
