The Indian government made a historic judgement on Monday and decided to revoke Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that had so far allowed the state of Jammu and Kashmir to enjoy a special status.
The erstwhile state has now been bifurcated into two union territories- Jammu and Kashmir on the one hand and Ladakh on the other.
The United Nations has finally made a comment on this political transformation in India and raised an alarm about the possibility of enhanced human rights violations as a result of the Centre’s mandate.
The United Nations has expressed its concerns over the scrapping of the constitutionally important Article 370 and talked about how India is violating the resolutions made at the Security Council by allowing for enhanced human rights violations.
One of the most important points made by the United Nations was that there was hardly any update and information coming from the valley in the aftermath of the government’s decision on the scrapping of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into union territories.
India has ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and this implies that it must allow its citizens the freedom of opinion and expression. This also includes the right to seek, receive and impart information. The United Nations also alleged that it had already raised an alarm about the growing human rights violation in Jammu and Kashmir in its report of 8th July, but no significant measures have been taken to address the concerns it brought into the limelight.
