We find ourselves at a time when election campaigning ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections is at its peak. Both the ruling and the Opposition parties are campaigning, conducting rallies and making their own set of grand promises to the people, to lure and entice them towards casting their precious vote in their favour.
How the elections will unfold, who will subsequently form the government and after having formed the government, who will fulfil the grand promises that they are making at the moment and who conveniently forgets them- only the coming days will reveal
But in the run up to the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress President has announced that the Congress if it comes to power will provide the sum of Rs 72,000 per annum to the poorest families of the nation. He made this announcement after meeting with the Congress Working Committee today.
The scheme that will provide the poorest families the substantial amount for their welfare and survival is going to be known as the Nyuntam Aay Yojana(NYAY). This comes in the broader context of the minimum income guarantee plan against the minimum employment guarantee promised by the ruling party.
The Congress President Rahul Gandhi has been talking about his interest in minimum income guarantee for a while now and the announcement of this policy seems only to be a continuation of his game plan ahead of the elections. While he was explaining this scheme, Mr. Gandhi said that every household belonging to the poorest section of the Indian society would be assured of Rs 12,000 per month under this scheme. The scheme will cover 20$ of the poorest families in the nation.
He also said that all the poor families will be guaranteed Rs 12,000 in a month and if they earn less than that, they will be aided with the left out amount under this scheme. The Minimum Income Threshold under the scheme is Rs 12,000.
The government will pay the difference amount for any family that is earning less than the amount in a month.
The Congress President Rahul Gandhi also hinted at the fact that given the fact that this was such a powerful scheme, it could be seen as a very important step in addressing poverty within the nation. In a significant way it could be taken as an extension of the MGNREGA project of the UPA. He also said that through the imitation of the scheme, the Congress would address widespread poverty in the nation.
