While the American President addressed a mega rally at the newly constructed Motera stadium in Ahmedabad before his visit to Delhi, the Capital experienced some hard core violence during an ongoing Anti-CAA resistance. Five people including a head constable were killed while 5o others have been seriously injured as the violence spiralled over the contentious citizenship law in northeast Delhi. The area turned into a battlefield where frenzied protestors took to setting houses, shops, cars and public property on fire and pelting stones at one another. The police had to resort to the use of fire gas shells and used lathicharge in order to bring the frenzied crowd under control.
The clashes had taken place in the Jaffrabad area of northeast Delhi between pro-CAA groups and those who were opposing the CAA. The violence began to spread to other neighbourhoods in the vicinity like Maujpur, Chandbagh, Khureji Khas and Bhajanpura. During the clashes the police personnel conducted flag marches and unleashed prohibitory orders in order to bring the situation under control
The situation did seem better as of Monday evening but this could happen only after 5o people were seriously inured and fresh clashes against the CAA broke out in the Capital. Sporadic cashes continued even late at night in areas such as Maujpur and closely neighbourhoods in the vicinity. Keeping the large scale of violent clashes that broke out in different parts of the city in mind, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said that he was very worried about the prevailing situation and called for an urgent meeting with all party MLAs of the violence hit areas. In his tweets, Arvind Kejriwal also urged all the residents of Delhi to not adhere to any provocations and ensure peace was retained at all costs.
He tweeted, “I am very worried about the prevailing situation in certain parts of Delhi. All of us should make all efforts to restore peace in our city. I again urge everyone to shun violence. I am meeting all MLAs of all parties of affected area along with senior officials in a while.”
The meeting is scheduled to take at the chief minister’s residence.
